Romans 12:2 - Renew your mind (Romanos 12:2 - Renueva tu entendimiento)

Romans 12:1-2 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Romans 12:2 begins with “and,” linking it to the prior verse. The next directions are included in our “reasonable service” to the Lord.

“Don’t be conformed” – to conform means to take the shape of, for example when you pour something into a mold. Paul is warning us against taking the shape of, looking like, being molded by, the world. We have been called by Jesus to live a life that looks different to that offered by the world.

The only way this is possible is by the power of Jesus in our lives.

In Ephesians 1:18-20, Paul is praying for the believers in Ephesus, and he asks God to show them how great is His power. God’s power, the same power that raised Jesus from the grave, now works on our behalf.

The way of the world is death, while the way of the Lord is life. Even after salvation, we are tempted by the flesh and the world, tempted to indulge in sin, tempted to justify sin, tempted to affirm sin. Bur God has given us a way to not be shaped by the world when it comes to sin:

1 Corinthians 10:13 - No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

The power of the spirit enables us to triumph over sin:

Romans 8:13 - For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live

So, rather than being molded by the world, we should allow the Spirit to work within us, to fundamentally change our being, in accordance with our new position as saved believers in Christ.

Galatians 5:16-17 - 16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

This “transformation” occurs by “the renewing of your mind.”

Renewing has the connotation of making again or replacing. Our minds (our thoughts, our desires, our wills) are no longer bound to sin, they are bound to Christ.

As believers, we have new minds – the very mind of Christ:

1 Corinthians 2:16 - For “who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

Colossians 3:9-11 - 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, 11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.

Earlier in 1 Corinthians, Paul makes several points about the mind of Christ.

The mind of Christ is opposed to the mind and wisdom of man:

1 Corinthians 2:5-6 - 5 that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. 6 However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.

The mind of Christ is the wisdom of God, which is hidden from non-believers and only available to those who are saved:

1 Corinthians 2:7-8 - 7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, 8 which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

We, as believers, have received the mind of Christ through the Holy Spirit:

1 Corinthians 2:10-12 - 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

Those who do not have the Spirit and are not saved, cannot comprehend the mind of Christ:

1 Corinthians 2:14 - But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

It is that mind, the very mind of Christ which is in us through the Holy Spirit, that enables us to overcome the world and its temptations. When we are beset by temptations, our one response, and the only effective one, should be to turn to Jesus – to find strength, comfort, and satisfaction in Him. 

Colossians 3:1-3 - 3 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

The second part of Romans 12:2 tells us what is the ultimate purpose of living transformed lives:

Romans 12:2 - And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

It is to prove God’s will, which is good, acceptable and perfect.

What does that mean, to “prove” God’s will?

It means to test, to examine, to deem worthy, to prove as genuine.

By living transformed lives, we test or prove that God’s will for us is perfect and perfectly good.

It is by living lives that are not of this world, not subject to sin and temptation, that we can show, to ourselves and to others, that God’s way is perfect. And the only way to do that is through the power and mind of Christ that we were given the moment that God saved us!

The lives of believers show God’s will to be good and perfect, and should stand as shining examples to the lost of God’s goodness and perfection.

Do not be surprised when non-believers act sinfully, mock you for your beliefs, attack you, etc. They cannot do otherwise – they are incapable of discerning the truth of spiritual matters. Even when they genuinely and earnestly try, without the spirit of God they cannot do so. And thus they rely on the wisdom of the world, which stands opposed to the mind of Christ, in making their judgments.

Brothers and sisters, we not only can rely on God’s wisdom when making judgments, we are commanded to do so. Living in a manner different to that of the world is our “reasonable service.”

Romanos 12:1-2 - Así que, hermanos, les ruego por las misericordias de Dios que presenten sus cuerpos como sacrificio vivo, santo y agradable a Dios, que es el culto racional de ustedes. 2 No se conformen a este mundo; más bien, transfórmense por la renovación de su entendimiento de modo que comprueben cuál sea la voluntad de Dios, buena, agradable y perfecta.

Las siguientes instrucciones están incluidas en nuestro “culto racional” al Señor.

“No se conformen”: conformarse significa tomar la forma de algo, por ejemplo, cuando viertes algo en un molde. Pablo nos está advirtiendo que no tomemos la forma del mundo, que no nos parezcamos al mundo, que no seamos moldeados por el mundo. Hemos sido llamados por Jesús a vivir una vida diferente a la que ofrece el mundo.

La única forma en que esto es posible es a través del poder de Jesús en nuestras vidas.

En Efesios 1:18-20, Pablo está orando por los creyentes en Éfeso y le pide a Dios que les muestre cuán grande es Su poder. El poder de Dios, el mismo poder que levantó a Jesús de la tumba, ahora trabaja a nuestro favor.

El camino del mundo es muerte, mientras que el camino del Señor es vida. Incluso después de la salvación, somos tentados por la carne y el mundo, tentados a caer en el pecado, tentados a justificar el pecado, tentados a afirmar el pecado. Pero Dios nos ha dado una manera de no ser moldeados por el mundo cuando se trata de pecado:

1 Corintios 10:13 - No les ha sobrevenido ninguna tentación que no sea humana; pero fiel es Dios, quien no los dejará ser tentados más de lo que ustedes pueden soportar, sino que juntamente con la tentación dará la salida, para que la puedan resistir.

El poder del espíritu nos permite triunfar sobre el pecado:

Romanos 8:13 - Porque si viven conforme a la carne, han de morir; pero si por el Espíritu hacen morir las prácticas de la carne, vivirán.

Entonces, en lugar de ser moldeados por el mundo, debemos permitir que el Espíritu obre dentro de nosotros, para cambiar fundamentalmente nuestro ser, de acuerdo con nuestra nueva posición como creyentes salvos en Cristo.

Gálatas 5:16-17 - 16 Digo, pues: Anden en el Espíritu, y así jamás satisfarán los malos deseos de la carne. 17 Porque la carne desea lo que es contrario al Espíritu, y el Espíritu lo que es contrario a la carne. Ambos se oponen mutuamente para que no hagan lo que quisieran.

Esta “transformación” ocurre por “la renovación de nuestro entendimiento”.

Renovar tiene la connotación de volver a hacer o reemplazar. Nuestras mentes (nuestros pensamientos, nuestros deseos, nuestras voluntades) ya no están atadas al pecado, están atadas a Cristo.

Como creyentes, tenemos mentes nuevas, la mente misma de Cristo:

1 Corintios 2:16 - Porque, ¿quién conoció la mente del Señor? ¿Quién lo instruirá? Pero nosotros tenemos la mente de Cristo.

Colosenses 3:9-11 - 9 No se mientan los unos a los otros; porque se han despojado del viejo hombre con sus prácticas 10 y se han vestido del nuevo, el cual se renueva para un pleno conocimiento conforme a la imagen de aquel que lo creó. 11 Aquí no hay griego ni judío, circuncisión ni incircuncisión, bárbaro ni escita, esclavo ni libre; sino que Cristo es todo y en todos.

Anteriormente en 1 Corintios, Pablo hace varios puntos acerca de la mente de Cristo.

La mente de Cristo se opone a la mente y sabiduría del hombre:

1 Corintios 2:5-6 - 5 para que su fe no esté fundada en la sabiduría de los hombres, sino en el poder de Dios. 6 Sin embargo, hablamos sabiduría entre los que han alcanzado madurez; pero una sabiduría, no de esta edad presente, ni de los príncipes de esta edad, que perecen. 

La mente de Cristo es la sabiduría de Dios, que está escondida de los no creyentes y solo está disponible para aquellos que son salvos:

1 Corintios 2:7-8 - 7 Más bien, hablamos la sabiduría de Dios en misterio, la sabiduría oculta que Dios predestinó desde antes de los siglos para nuestra gloria. 8 Ninguno de los príncipes de esta edad conoció esta sabiduría; porque si ellos la hubieran conocido, nunca habrían crucificado al Señor de la gloria.

Nosotros, como creyentes, hemos recibido la mente de Cristo a través del Espíritu Santo:

1 Corintios 2:10-12 - 10 Pero a nosotros Dios nos las reveló por el Espíritu; porque el Espíritu todo lo escudriña, aun las cosas profundas de Dios. 11 Pues ¿quién de los hombres conoce las cosas profundas del hombre, sino el espíritu del hombre que está en él? Así también, nadie ha conocido las cosas profundas de Dios, sino el Espíritu de Dios. 12 Y nosotros no hemos recibido el espíritu de este mundo, sino el Espíritu que procede de Dios, para que conozcamos las cosas que Dios nos ha dado gratuitamente.

Los que no tienen el Espíritu y no son salvos, no pueden comprender la mente de Cristo:

1 Corintios 2:14 - Pero el hombre natural no acepta las cosas que son del Espíritu de Dios, porque le son locura; y no las puede comprender, porque se han de discernir espiritualmente.

Es esa mente, la mente misma de Cristo que está en nosotros por medio del Espíritu Santo, la que nos permite vencer al mundo y sus tentaciones. Cuando nos acosan las tentaciones, nuestra única respuesta, y la única efectiva, debe ser volvernos a Jesús, para encontrar fuerza, consuelo y satisfacción en Él.

Colosenses 3:1-3 - 1 Siendo, pues, que ustedes han resucitado con Cristo, busquen las cosas de arriba donde Cristo está sentado a la diestra de Dios. 2 Ocupen la mente en las cosas de arriba, no en las de la tierra; 3 porque han muerto, y su vida está escondida con Cristo en Dios.

La segunda parte de Romanos 12:2 nos dice cuál es el propósito final de vivir vidas transformadas:

Romanos 12:2 - No se conformen a este mundo; más bien, transfórmense por la renovación de su entendimiento de modo que comprueben cuál sea la voluntad de Dios, buena, agradable y perfecta.

Es comprobar la voluntad de Dios, que es buena, aceptable y perfecta.

¿Qué significa eso de “comprobar” la voluntad de Dios?

Significa comprobar, examinar, juzgar digno, comprobar como genuino.

Al vivir vidas transformadas, comprobamos o demostramos que la voluntad de Dios para nosotros es perfecta y perfectamente buena.

Es en vivir vidas que no son de este mundo, que no están sujetas al pecado y la tentación, que podemos mostrar, a nosotros mismos y a los demás, que el camino de Dios es perfecto. ¡Y la única forma de hacerlo es a través del poder y la mente de Cristo que se nos dio en el momento en que Dios nos salvó!

Las vidas de los creyentes muestran que la voluntad de Dios es buena y perfecta, y deben ser ejemplos brillantes de la bondad y la perfección de Dios para los perdidos.

No te sorprendas cuando los no creyentes actúen pecaminosamente, se burlen de ti por tus creencias, te ataquen, etc. No pueden hacer otra cosa: son incapaces de discernir la verdad de los asuntos espirituales. Incluso cuando lo intentan genuina y fervientemente, sin el espíritu de Dios no pueden hacerlo. Y así confían en la sabiduría del mundo, que se opone a la mente de Cristo, al hacer sus juicios.

Hermanos y hermanas, no solo podemos confiar en la sabiduría de Dios al emitir juicios, sino que también se nos ordena que lo hagamos. Vivir de una manera diferente a la del mundo es nuestro “servicio razonable”.
