We are children of God - each and every day

I heard a song on the radio yesterday by the band Cain (link to video), and some of the lyrics really stuck with me.

"On my best day, I am a child of God.

On my worst day, I am a child of God."

What a simple, yet powerful, truth!

It is easy to feel that we are children of God on the good days. On the days when things are going well for us. On the days when we feel that we are doing what God has called us to do. On the days when we are obedient.

But what about the other days?

The days when we know we have strayed?

The days when we get heart-breaking news that shakes our world?

The days when we feel small, abandoned, lonely?

The days when God feels distant?

The truth is that we are no less children of God on the worst days than on the best days.

See what the Bible says:

1 John 3

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!

Our status as children of God is anchored in His love for us!

John 1:12

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name

When we repent and put our faith in Jesus, he gives us the right to become His children. We can boldly claim that right because of His promise and His love.

In Jeremiah the prophet speaks of God's eternal love for Israel, but it can also be applied to believers:

Jeremiah 31:3

The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying:

“Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love;

Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.

And in Romans. Paul explains in no uncertain terms that the love of God overcomes every obstacle:

Romans 8:37-39

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.  For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,  nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Our status as children of God is secured by God's love. And that love is eternal and constant.

It does not depend on how we feel. It does not depend on what kind of day we are having. It does not depend on circumstances.

So yes, on our best days we feel like we are children of God, and we are.

And on our worst days, even though we may not feel like it, we are still children of God.

Because God loves his children, even on our worst days.
