God knows my name!

Oftentimes, when the Lord is trying to impress something upon me, He will either repeat a theme in my life several times in order to be sure I get it (I can be pretty hard-headed at times), or form a connection in my brain between two concepts.

This is an example of the latter.

As we were reading scripture this past Sunday in our life group, a particular verse stood out to me.

Isaiah 40:26

 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:

    Who created all these?

He who brings out the starry host one by one

    and calls forth each of them by name.

Because of his great power and mighty strength,

    not one of them is missing.

Just a few days earlier, NASA had released some amazing images taken by the new Webb space telescope. What a blessing to see the glory of God's creation on display!

Looking at those images showing sprawling galaxies and countless stars it's easy to feel insignificant. The universe is so vast, and we are such an infinitesimally small part of it...

BUT...

I can take great comfort in knowing that the Lord my God, the One who "brings forth the starry host," the Creator of the unimaginably vast universe and every single thing in it, knows my name.

It is literally incomprehensible to me, and I believe it only because the Bible says it is true, not because I can wrap my head around it.

In a small, out-of-the-way section of a small, out-of-the-way galaxy, there is a small star. Around it circles a ball of rock. And on that rock, one of the 7.5 billion people is a knucklehead named Henry. And God. Knows. My. Name.

I hope that thought brings you peace and comfort when you feel insignificant, when you believe that your life does not matter. It matters to the One who created you specifically and knows you intimately. The One who paid the price for your transgression with His own blood so you could be reconciled to Him.

This verse in Isaiah speaks of the nation of Israel, but I believe it to also be applicable to those who God has redeemed through His Son.

Isaiah 43:1

But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob,

And He who formed you, O Israel:

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;

I have called you by your name;

You are Mine.
